The Day of Bible School is Not Over Yet!

For the last few years I have noticed an increasing trend, more so in word than actually in deed.  That trend is hearing people bemoan the effective end of annual events like Vacation Bible School.  They cry out that our children are busier than ever before with sports, clubs, vacations, educational opportunities, etc. and they are simply unwilling to take enough time away from those commitments to have a truly successful Bible School.  There is one point on which we can agree.

We are busier than we have ever been.  Yes, perhaps some are even too busy.  I know of families who have multiple activities scheduled outside of the home practically every day of the week.  No, it’s not sinful (as long as they do not prioritize these activities above their service to God) but it certainly isn’t conducive to a strong home.  However, is this really a reason to abandon worthwhile events like an extra summer emphasis on Bible education?

I fear that too many times congregation cannot rally the adult workers they need to have a successful Bible School but rather than admit their unwillingness to work like they need to they would rather blame the busyness of their kids and let it go at that.  But children learn from example.  If they are taught to make God and the church a priority they typically will, at least in their youth.  However, if they are taught to shove God and the church into the background for the sake of their own pleasure then that will be the attitude that they develop.

Generally speaking, if a congregation can excite their adults with the prospects of Bible School then that congregation can have a successful week.  But if they are already firmly convinced it’s a waste of time there is very little that can be done to change their minds.

Vacation Bible School holds some of the greatest memories of my childhood and I am greatly encouraged by the number of statements I have seen in the social media (Facebook and Twitter) about congregations having great and successful Bible Schools.  There seems to be a renewed excitement about such possibilities.  While some congregations may find it expedient to put their resources into other necessary works I hope that Bible School would not be abandoned simply because of the apathy of their members.  The day of Bible School is not over unless we just want it to be!
