Back last year I wrote a brief piece highlighting the efforts of a particular individual from here at Phillips Street who had repaired another member’s push mower and then took it about himself to go and mow their yard while they were gone one day. It was a simple act of kindness but one that should characterize more of us in our efforts to serve God by serving one another.
A few months ago I witnessed something that I likely will never forget. My family and I had gone to Jackson, TN for the day and later that evening sat down to supper at Chili’s. I really wasn’t paying much attention to the conversations of those around us but Kristy called my attention to a group sitting behind her. She was not eavesdropping on their conversation but they were speaking relatively loud to such an extent that it did not take a lot of effort to overhear what they were saying. There were three couples sitting around the table among whom was one man who took the lead to talk to another couple with them about the church of Christ. These were New Testament Christians who had taken it upon themselves to approach these other two precious souls with the gospel. Might it have been uncomfortable for them? Might they have been able to find other things to do that night? Could they have shifted the conversation to something more easily discussed? Most surely. However, they had a commitment to the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20). They had a burning fire deep in their bones (Jeremiah 20:9). They had a duty that needed to be done (Ecclesiastes 12:13).
These were two souls that needed to be saved through the only available saving means, the gospel of Jesus Christ (Romans 1:16). I do not know who these people were nor what congregation they were from but all of the lip service I have heard Christians offer concerning personal evangelism over the years has now taken a back seat to this sermon preached before my very eyes. These people were caught doing good and their evangelistic zeal is one that will not be soon forgotten.
