Yeah, Who Didn’t See That Coming?

Maybe fifteen years ago you experienced the same thing I did.  The movie Titanic was released and we went, spending good money, sitting for three hours, and investing all of our attention knowing what the end result was going to be.  I mean, honestly, when that big boat sank at the end, who didn’t see that coming?  History had already warned us what the end was going to be so nobody was surprised, at least I hope!

However, too often, we avoid the lessons of history when they do not satisfy our desires, particularly when our desire is sin.  As a people we quench our insatiable appetite for sin with reckless abandon with little thought of the sure consequences.  But history has already told us that sin, like that big boat, will end in sure destruction:

§      Sin kindles the anger of God (Deuteronomy 31:17).

§      Sin separates man from God (Isaiah 59:1-2).

§      Sin enslaves man (John 8:34).

§      Sin causes shame (Proverbs 14:34).

§      Sin will cause us to be sent away by God (Luke 13:27).

§      And sin ultimately results in eternal spiritual death (Romans 6:23).

That’s it.  That’s the total package that sin has to offer.  All of the glamorization and romanticizing of sin we see in the world is effective in persuading us that it can bring true lasting joy.  But those expectations always end in disappointment.  Why, because the warnings weren’t there?  No, only because we refused to see them coming!
