Christians Must Rise!

I’m both worried and annoyed.  No, that’s not a great combination; but as I look at our social and cultural landscape I can’t help it.  Every day as I scan the news I see article after article indicating a dramatic shift our country is making and it stirs me up.  Among our neighbors there seems to be a mass exodus in attitude from standard morality and the need for godliness to extreme concern for inclusion and political correctness.  Let me mention a couple of examples to illustrate:

First, in an interview with Rick Warren broadcast on Christmas Eve, Piers Morgan commented that he believed the Bible was fundamentally flawed and needs to, like the Constitution, be amended from time to time.  Specifically this comment was made based on the Bible’s outright condemnation of homosexuality.  Mr. Morgan doesn’t like it, as is the case with many Americans, and therefore would like for it to be changed.  Maybe it used to be considered evil, but now is should be considered good.

Second, an article came out reporting that some folks had indeed amended the Bible.  A new “translation” was being released called the Queen James Bible which by its own admission “resolves any homophobic interpretations” because they “wanted to make a book filled with the word of God that nobody could use to incorrectly condemn God’s LGBT children.”  Seriously?

However, my worry and annoyance isn’t in the fact that some off-the-wall, left-wing news anchor attacked the standard validity of the Bible.  My concern is not that some people with a pro-homosexual agenda perverted the Bible by editing it to suit their purposes.  These people are of the world.  When you are in the world and of the world you do worldly things.  My worry and annoyance is that there is little to no uproar.

When Piers Morgan criticized the current gun laws in America people flocked to sign a petition to have him deported.  The reaction to his “amend the Bible statement?”  One or two online articles citing dissatisfaction.  Any outrage expressed on social media?  Not really.  Any public uproar about the new pro-homosexual “Bible?”  Relative quiet.

As a society we have become completely inattentive to the assault on faith in our country.  We just don’t care.  Are you writing a sitcom and need a “village idiot?”  Just make them a Christian.  Directing a movie and need a whipping boy?  Just let them express disagreement with any socially acceptable sin.  We have redeveloped into Israel of old.

Isaiah pronounced woe upon them because they “called evil good and good evil” (Isaiah 5:20).  These two stories only represent a larger shift that is continuing to occur on a greater level each day, shifting us farther and farther away from God.  The trend has to end.  Political correctness must quit ruling the day.  Socially acceptable sin has to stop.  The world should not be louder than the church.  Christians must rise.
