Most likely you have heard the news out of Rome in the past week that the Roman Catholic Pope, Benedict XVI, has decided to retire. He does not believe his health is conducive to his work any longer and simply wants to give his responsibilities to someone who is more physically capable. Since his announcement I’ve seen a lot of comments on social media. Some were respectful. Some were funny. Others were mean-spirited and unproductive.
However, as Benedict XVI fades into retirement he said he simply wants to withdraw to a life of prayer. I believe that is an honorable plan. I think we should join in and pray with him, but maybe not in the way that you think:
- Let’s pray that he reads his Bible with an open and honest heart.
- Let’s pray that he might be convinced of his own fallibility and reliance on God.
- Let’s pray that he comes to know the true Head of the church.
- Let’s pray that he learns the identity of the true church of Christ.
- Let’s pray that he sees and accepts the fullness of redemption’s requirements.
- Let’s pray that he could become a Christian.
- Let’s pray that his influence could be used to further the cause of Jesus.
- Let’s pray that the dearth of Catholicism and all other forms of denominationalism could end.
- Let’s pray that all men truly be united together in Christ as His disciples.
- Let’s pray that the work of the Christ’s church would flourish throughout our world.
- Let’s pray that he could be saved.
Sure, Benedict XVI might be the pope of the Catholic church, a dignitary, and a celebrity. But let’s also keep in mind that he is a lost soul. He is part of our mission field. His soul is just as precious as any other. He needs the gospel. So as he spends the remainder of his life in prayer let’s pray with him. Let’s pray for the pope.
