Faith is one of the most fundamental subjects discussed throughout the Bible.  It is sadly ironic, then, that faith is one of the most misunderstood subjects discussed throughout the Bible as well.  All across the nation and around the world every week countless pulpits are filled with those who tout error concerning faith.  Never has there been a time when it was more important to have a clear understanding of what Biblical faith truly is…

Title:  What is Biblical Faith?

Introduction:  Of all the fundamental religious principles that exist, the single most misunderstood and perverted one has to be the concept of faith.  One doesn’t have to look any farther than how “faith” is described to know how perverted and misunderstood it is: “Faith is a blind leap in the dark,” or “Where knowledge ends, faith begins.”  And when you don’t even know what faith is then it is hard to develop proper faith because you are always either under or over reaching.  The Bible, though, clearly and concisely defines what biblical faith is – it is “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1).  It is that basic definition that lays the foundation for a richer and fuller knowledge of what Biblical faith is.

Discussion Points:

  • Biblical Faith is Supported – One of the greatest arguments against religion in general is its reliance on faith, believed to be absent of any evidence.  There are those called “empiricists” who say that something must be experienced by empirical evidence to be considered factual – sight, smell, taste, touch, hearing.  Scientists say that things must be observed and controlled in order for them to be considered factual.  Both say that faith is absent of any type of evidence, but is just a “blind leap in the dark.”  Such ignorance comes from a misunderstanding of what faith is.  By definition faith demands evidence, or supportive information.  This is the difference between a wish and faith.  A wish is absent of evidence, but faith is not.  The Bible clearly supports the fact that faith requires evidence, and identifies what that evidence is – John 20:30-31; 1 John 5:13.  Biblical faith demands supportive knowledge and evidence, making it not a blind leap in the dark, but rather a surety.
  • Biblical Faith is Sure – Another misleading thought many maintain regarding faith is that faith is absent of knowledge.  It is nothing more than a hope.  Ask a person if they know God exists.  Many will think they lessen the statement by saying they believe God exists.  However, to believe that God exists is to know God exists because Biblical faith is sure.  The New Testament clearly depicts faith to be interchangeable with knowledge – Acts 28:31; Hebrews 3:6; 1 John 2:28.  Perhaps the greatest example of the surety of faith is a personal statement Paul made to Timothy (2 Timothy 1:12).  Paul’s faith was so strong that he was willing to suffer anything thrown at him.  How could that faith not be a surety?  Thus, Biblical faith is not only supported, but it is a surety in looking forward toward salvation.
  • Biblical Faith is Saving – Are we saved by faith?  Absolutely –Ephesians 2:8; Romans 3:24-26.  No honest hearted individual who has read his or her Bibles can deny that, yes, we are saved by faith.  However, the issue isn’t whether we are saved by faith, but at what point are we saved by faith.  Are we saved by faith alone?  Are we saved by faith when faith is made perfect through outward obedience according to God’s will?  Such are the options present in the minds of this world, but which does the Bible support?  Notice the example of Abraham as outlined throughout the New Testament – Romans 4:1-3; Hebrews 11:8-10,13; James 2:21-24.  How could the points made about Abraham be missed so badly by the denominational world?  Abraham believed God, and his faith was wrought with works by which he was counted righteous.  Yes, Biblical faith is saving, but Biblical faith is an obedient faith, submissive to the will and word of God.
So many perverted views of faith exist in this world, it is always good for us to revisit this fundamental of Christianity.  Do you truly have Biblical faith?
